real party: play outside party

August 3, 2010

We’re very excited to share this week’s real party.  Every single thing about this party is so great.  It comes to us from the very talented Meredith of Lily Jane.  Meredith’s little guy loves nothing more than to play outside – so for his 3rd birthday they decided to plan his party around an outdoor theme.

As a stationery designer, Meredith created all the cute paper goods herself.   She first spent an afternoon collecting items at the park withher  son: pine cones, grasses, leaves, etc.  then arranged the found items to look like letters and hand drew each one.  Then, using the computer she pieced each together to create the wording she needed for the invitations, stickers and thank you cards.  So sweet!

They hosted the party beneath some trees at a local park, right near a little pond that’s home to a family of ducks.

Party activities included games like duck-duck-goose and a nature scavenger hunt.  Then the kids each got a walnut boat and set them to sail on the pond (be sure to come back tomorrow for the DIY on the super cute walnut boats!).

They made a rainbow cake: 6 layers of sugary color sandwiched with cream cheese icing.  It turned out beautifully and Meredith says it was a great way to teach colors and color combinations to her son – love that!

The favor bags were full of bubbles, sidewalk chalk and a leaf-shaped Rice Krispies treat.

Meredith says,”The party was a success and well worth all the effort put into it.  Planning children’s birthday parties may well be the most entertaining project there is.”   We agree!

Stay tuned for the cute walnut boat DIY tomorrow!
